The piece of political art above is Norman Rockwell’s, “The
Problem We all Live With”. This picture was created after Ruby Bridges was
escorted by federal marshals to her first day of kindergarten. Ruby Bridges was
the only black child attending the school. The image displays her walking in
front of protestors in 1960, New Orleans. The picture is important because it
relates to the Brown vs. Board case and it was the first time in history a
school would be integrated. This was the time of limited freedom and racial
segregation which the reality of the South. The federal marshals shown,
demonstrate just how much protection the little girl needed by the government to
get safety enter school. I think that Rockwell’s art was trying to prove and
show the ignorance and segregation issues in the South. The little girl Ruby,
is the focal point of the picture as she’s shown in a little white dress shows
innocence of a 6 year old. I think he wanted the world to see how ignorant they
were to treat a little girl like this. Chances are Ruby was too young to even
known what racism was, but it still doesn’t stop discrimination and racism from
happening every day.
