Diane Arbus Work

Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, NYC by Diane Arbus

This picture was taken in 1962 of Colin Wood whose parents had just gotten a divorce. You can see the frustration in his stature and facial expression. Diane Arbus is known for her subject category in that she chose to photograph people whom the world didn't want to see. She selected transgenders, circus performers, people with disabilities, etc. to give a spotlight to those who are not necessarily recognized by society. I like this picture and the idea of her work because she didn't consider the external or societal definition of beauty but instead, her own ideas. This picture really depicts the emotion of the child and his need to connect and it invokes thought about looking beyond stereotypes.
