Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was diagnosed with Polio at a young age and then was tragically hit by a bus that left her in much pain for some time. Painting that was her hobby became her life. In the 1920 - 1930's she travled through mexico. The Mexican culture inspired her self portraits. She had married another artist Diego Rivera, who always seemed to outshine her but now she is considered to be an icon for feminists and LGBTQ community. In this paiting "viva la vida" meaning Long live life, Kahlo wrote her name in the watermelon and the place that this was created. This was done only a few days before she died at a young ago of 47. Interestingly enough watermelons are associated with the Day of the Dead a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico. All the different shapes of watermelon I think represent the different stages that Frida went through to become the person she was at then end of her life.
