Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was an Irish artist and was one unique painter that emerged during the post-war period. He moved to England as a self taught artist and became apart of the local art scene. His latest painting above is called Study of a Bull. Bacon had an interest in bullfighting and also after the death of his lover, his art became more personalized focusing on mortality. He painted this artwork while his health was deteriorating and his artwork reflected this. The bull is a symbol of male virility. You can see in the painting that the bull known for its strength is fading caught between a black and white era(life and death) This could mean that since Bacon knew he was dying and was weak, he knew in time that he would be heading into the light.
