This portrait is titled the 'dune négresse' which was painted with oils on a canvas in the 1800s by a famous artist named Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist. Benoist fit in with the middle and upper class ideal of "womanhood" in that she conformed to the social expectations of women to marry, raise children, and forego a career. With that being said, this painting was seen as a voice of protest in discourse over human bondage. This portrait now represents the celebration of the abolishment of slavery in the colonies by the French Revolution. Based on all of this, I wanted to do something to embrace the African American culture to bring awareness to black history; not just because its black history month but because black history should be acknowledged all the time . With that being said, I want to draw a side profile of an African woman using color pencils to elaborate on the skin pigmentation and head wrap.
