Above is a picture of Michelle Obama unveiling her portrait at The Smithsonian. This portrait received a lot of mixed reviews, seen especially on social media. People seem to be attacking the fact that it did not look exactly like her. Personally, I don't think it looks anything like her, but I can still appreciate the beauty of the piece of art. The artist, Amy Sherald, painted Michelle in her signature grayscale, leaving the picture with a serene feel. The First Lady's pose is very contemplative, which also adds to this feeling. While reading about this portrait, I found out that the pattern on Michelle's skirt mimics the quilts made by an African-American community in Gee's Bend, Alabama. Sherald says that she paints people not only to show the person, but to tell a larger story. I think she captured this idea and that the portrait captures Michelle Obama's feel and history rather than focusing on the way she looks.
