Sol Lewitt

The article, “A Houston Homeowner Is Uncovering a Painted-Over Sol LeWitt on Her Wall-but She Doesn’t Own It”, was very shocking. The Houston homeowner, was an art collector and had known that there was a Sol LeWitt drawing hidden somewhere inside their home. The article discusses the Wall Drawing #679, which showed a conceptual art piece that displayed a grid of blue squares that have been segmented by red and yellow lines. The Wall Drawing #679, commissioned by William F. Stern was covered up before the house was sold. I find it remarkable that until the new homeowner’s friend took a knife to the wall the drawing was covered by sheet rock. The problem
with this painting was how it would be un-erased from the covered wall. I wonder why the painting was covered to begin with, and I wonder how they will uncover the painting without damaging it. The article, did not explain how the unearthing process would occur, but rather questioned if it is even possible in the first place. I find it odd that the painting does not belong to Hitchcock, the homeowner even though it is now her home. I hope in the near future they find a way to uncover the painting, so it can be shared with the modern art lovers. The picture above is Wall Painting #1136, I found this work to be very interesting as it really displays a conceptual work by Sol LeWitt. The painting uses primary and secondary colors in a unique curve and interlocking band pattern.
