Sol LeWitt
The article on the discovery and potential "un-erasing" of a Sol LeWitt piece was very interesting. Often you hear about people uncovering important art pieces in homes that they have acquired, but this story is particularly intriguing because the Hitchcocks, the family that discovered the Sol LeWitt wall painting in their home, do not necessarily own the painting. This painting was created on a wall in their home and covered up by paint, essentially "erasing" it. The art turned out to read somewhat like a set of instructions, therefore it is the typical piece of artwork. The rights to this artwork are owned by the Menil foundation, which are the previous owners of the house and hold the certificate of authenticity and diagram of the work. The Hitchcocks, who own the home and the "pigments on the wall" that make up this Sol LeWitt piece are now attempting to un-erase this painting in hopes of making this piece part of their home. This piece, even though it is just instructions to a trained eye, is a work of art to the Hitchcocks and hope to keep it alive.
