Jack Whitten
These painting by Jack Whitten are called Mask of
God I and II. Whitten painted these artworks in 1987 for Joseph Campbell. Whitten
was inspired by Campbell’s four-book series, The Masks of God. This was the start of Jack Whitten’s collages in
his memorial paintings. Joseph Campbell was an American
mythologist that had an interest in the human spirit. Both Whitten and Campbell
are fascinated with encounters that go beyond the human mind. I like these paintings because when a person is looking at these paintings, they wonder what are they looking at, or how were these paintings made, or even what materials were
used to make the paintings. Also, the paintings are very mysterious and unique
